The Ora: Lake Garda’s afternoon thermal wind
The Ora is the southerly thermal that switches on almost every warm afternoon, blowing up the lake from south to north. It is the most reliable wind in the Alps: steady, predictable, and the reason Torbole and Malcesine became legendary for kitesurfing, windsurfing, wingfoiling and sailing alike. We have watched it arrive from the beach at Torbole more times than we can count. Here is how it works and how to read it.

What makes the Ora blow
The Ora is a textbook thermal, or valley, wind. Through the morning the sun heats the mountain slopes and valleys north of the lake. The warmed air rises, pressure over the northern end drops, and cooler, denser air from the southern basin and the plain is drawn northward up the lake to replace it. The same funnel that accelerates the morning Pelér works in reverse: as the lake narrows toward Torbole and Riva, the southerly compresses and speeds up.
Because it is driven by daytime heating, the Ora is wonderfully rhythmic. On a stable summer day you can nearly set your watch by it. That is also its weakness, since anything that interrupts the heating interrupts the wind.
When it blows
The thermal typically fills in during the early afternoon (Brezza’s window runs 13:00 to 19:00), building to its best around mid-afternoon and easing into the evening. Midsummer gives the longest, most dependable sessions. The morning matters too: after a strong Pelér the atmosphere takes longer to flip, and the Ora arrives later or underpowered. After a quiet grey morning with sudden clearing, it can surprise. And these hours are indications, not guarantees. On days when a synoptic north flow dominates, the Pelér can keep blowing through the afternoon and the Ora never shows at all.
Where it blows best
The upper, narrow half of the lake is the Ora’s home. Torbole and the Riva corner get the strongest, steadiest flow; Malcesine, Campione and the Limone/Capo Reamol shore are all first-class. The wind is noticeably stronger mid-lake than at any beach, and it fades progressively toward the wide southern basin, where an Ora day is felt as a light-to-moderate breeze.
Strong thermal or weak thermal?
Four things decide the day. Sunshine: a clear sky means a strong thermal, while a capped, cloudy sky starves it. The pressure gradient: when southern pressure (Ghedi) leads northern (Bolzano), the synoptic flow reinforces the thermal and the day is Ora-favoured. The morning wind: a hard Pelér morning often delays or dampens the afternoon. Storms: a thunderstorm anywhere near the lake can flatten the Ora in minutes or replace it with violent gusts. Afternoon storm risk is the single biggest session-killer in summer.
Who the Ora is for
Everyone. This is the wind that made Garda a wind-sports destination. It is steady enough for learning to kite, windsurf or sail, strong enough for planing, foiling and full-power kite sessions, and punctual enough to plan a holiday around. It is why the kite, windsurf and sailing schools cluster around Torbole and Malcesine, and why the lake’s afternoons belong to kites, sails and wings.
